The Rolex Sky-Dweller is a 42mm Oyster watch with two travel-minded tricks: a second time zone on an off-centre 24-hour disc, and an annual calendar that needs a hand correction only once a year, after February. The fluted bezel turns to choose what the crown sets. Since 2023 new Sky-Dwellers carry 336xxx references and calibre 9002, and the steel and white gold 336934 is the entry point to the range.

Rolex showed the first Sky-Dweller at Baselworld 2012, in gold only. Steel arrived in 2017 at well under half the gold price. The dial looks busy at first, so we start with how it works.

How the Sky-Dweller works

Three things are going on: two time zones, a calendar that knows the months, and a bezel that works as a selector.

The second time zone

The centre hour and minute hands show local time. Home time, which Rolex calls reference time, sits on a rotating 24-hour disc set slightly off-centre, read against a small inverted red triangle just below the Rolex name. Because the disc counts 24 hours, you can tell whether it is 7 in the morning or 7 in the evening back home.

When you land somewhere new, you move only the local hour hand. It jumps an hour at a time, the minutes and seconds keep running, and the date follows local time forward or back. One owner writing for Quill & Pad noted that the disc has no lume, so home time is hard to read in the dark.

The Saros annual calendar

The date sits at 3 o'clock under the Cyclops lens. The month shows in 12 small windows around the dial edge, just outside the hour markers, and the current month's window is red. Rolex named the system Saros, after the Greek term for the cycle by which eclipses repeat.

The calendar knows which months have 30 days and which have 31. It does not know about February. So once a year, when February ends, you set the date to the 1st by hand.

The mechanism is compact. Monochrome Watches describes a planetary gear set with one wheel carrying four fingers, for April, June, September and November, and counts just four extra wheels over an ordinary date.

The Ring Command bezel

The fluted bezel rotates a short way through three click positions, plus a neutral rest. Each position tells the crown, once pulled out, which job to do: date and month, local hour, or reference time. At rest, pulling the crown sets nothing. Monochrome counts about 60 components in the patented system. With no pushers or correctors cut into the case, it keeps a 100-metre water rating.

Order matters. Setting the reference time also moves the hour hand, so set home time first, then the local hour, then the date. The Quill & Pad owner admitted that getting AM and PM in step with the date took a few tries. If your date changes at lunchtime, that is a setting slip, not a fault.

The table covers the main steel, two-tone and gold references. Leather-strap gold models have their own reference numbers, and the 336238 and 336235 are the calibre 9002 successors to the 2020 Oysterflex pair.

  • 2012. Gold only, on a bracelet or leather strap, with Roman or Arabic numerals. Calibre 9001 was developed for this model, and Revolution reported it at 380 parts and 14 patents.
  • 2017. The steel 326934 and two-tone 326933 arrived with luminous rectangular hour markers and longer hands. Monochrome gave the 326934's launch price as EUR 13,150, when gold versions then started at EUR 34,850.
  • 2021. Steel and two-tone models gained the Jubilee bracelet.
  • 2023. aBlogtoWatch reported the whole range moving to calibre 9002, with 336xxx references. The launch trio brought a mint green dial to the 336934 (until then a Datejust colour), a blue-green dial new to the Sky-Dweller on the Everose 336935, and the first white gold Sky-Dweller on Oysterflex, the 336239.
  • 2024. Gold got the Jubilee for the first time: Everose 336935 with a slate dial, yellow gold 336938 with a white dial.

What changed with calibre 9002

The 9002 is an update of the 9001. It gains Rolex's Chronergy escapement, with a pallet fork and escape wheel in paramagnetic nickel-phosphorus, plus a revised rotor and bridges. The finished watch is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, accurate to 2 seconds a day either way. The power reserve is about 72 hours, which aBlogtoWatch notes is the same figure the model has carried since 2012.

To tell the generations apart, look for two tiny Rolex coronets at 6 o'clock on 336xxx dials. aBlogtoWatch also spotted a thinner seconds hand on the 336934, and on gold bracelet models the lug width moved from 21mm to 22mm.

Is the newer watch worth paying more for? Day to day, a well-kept 326934 does everything a 336934 does. The 9002 resists magnetism better, and a 2023 or later watch is more likely to be inside Rolex's five-year guarantee. Choose on condition and papers first, generation second.

Sky-Dweller steel vs two-tone vs gold

Steel with a white gold bezel (326934, 336934). Rolex calls this White Rolesor. Only the bezel is gold, so it looks like plain steel from a few feet away. The 326934 came in black, white and blue, and the 336934 added mint green.

Yellow Rolesor (326933, 336933). The bezel, crown and centre bracelet links are yellow gold. It feels warmer, like a classic two-tone Rolex. The 326933 came with white, champagne or black dials.

Full gold. Everose, yellow or white gold. aBlogtoWatch found the gold bracelet version heavy on the wrist. On Rolex's US list prices, gold on Oysterflex costs about three times as much as steel.

Bracelets. The Oyster is flatter and sportier. The Jubilee is dressier and drapes more. The Oysterflex is a metal blade covered in black elastomer, with Glidelock for up to 15mm of adjustment without tools. The Oyster and Jubilee have an Easylink link that adds about 5mm.

How the Sky-Dweller wears at 42mm

The current case is 42mm across and 13.8mm thick, and aBlogtoWatch gives 22mm between the lugs on bracelet models. Reviews of the earlier steel model gave 14.1mm. It is about a millimetre wider than a Datejust 41 and sits taller.

Every review we read says it wears bigger than those numbers. Monochrome found it comfortable on wrists above roughly 17cm. The Quill & Pad owner called it top-heavy and had the bracelet sized snugly to stop it sliding. He did like that the bezel slopes down, so shirt cuffs slip over it.

On a slim wrist, try one before you commit. For a second time zone in a 40mm case, see our GMT-Master II buyer's guide. For a similar look without the complications, read the Datejust buyer's guide.

What to check on a pre-owned Sky-Dweller

  1. Match the reference to the watch. Reference and serial should agree with the papers, and the dial should suit the reference. A mint green dial belongs on a 336934, not a 326934. Our guide to reading a Rolex reference and serial number shows where to look.
  2. Confirm the generation. A watch sold as 2023 or later should have the two small coronets at 6 o'clock.
  3. Run every function. With the seller's permission, click the bezel through each position. Each should feel distinct and change what the crown does. The local hour should jump cleanly while the seconds keep going. A bezel that spins loosely or does nothing is a red flag.
  4. Watch the date change. A Saros date flips instantly. A date that creeps over, or a month marker that sits off its window, needs a watchmaker's eye.
  5. Study the fluted bezel. Gold fluting is soft, and polishing rounds the sharp ridges. Soft, uneven edges usually mean it has been polished.
  6. Check the bracelet. Hold the watch by the case and see how much the bracelet sags. Some stretch is normal. A lot means heavy wear.
  7. Ask for papers and history. Rolex has given new watches a five-year guarantee since July 2015, so the warranty card date tells you whether coverage may remain. Service receipts matter more here than on a three-hand watch.

Why servicing matters on a complex movement

Since 2015, Rolex's recommended service interval has been about 10 years under normal wear. The calendar, 24-hour disc and Ring Command module all add parts, and the movement family was built for this one model. Use a watchmaker who has had a 9001 or 9002 apart before.

After a service, ask for every bezel position to be tested and for the calendar to be run through both a 30-day and a 31-day month end. Signs a service may be due sooner: a rate well outside spec, a full wind that no longer lasts close to three days, a gritty bezel, or a slow date change.

  • 336235, Everose on Oysterflex: $53,450.

Earlier US list prices, kept here as history:

  • January 2022: aBlogtoWatch listed the 326934 at $14,300 and the 326933 at $17,400.
  • March 2023: at the 336xxx launch, aBlogtoWatch and Time and Watches listed the 336934 at $15,650, the white gold 336239 at $42,700 and the Everose 336935 at $50,900.

Who the Sky-Dweller suits

It makes sense if you travel or work across time zones, want a calendar you can mostly forget, and like a Rolex dressier than the sports models. It makes less sense on a small wrist, or if you need home time readable in the dark. Steel is the sensible start. Gold on Oysterflex costs about three times as much.

FAQ

How does the Rolex Sky-Dweller annual calendar work?

It uses Rolex's Saros annual calendar. The date sits at 3 o'clock and the month shows in one of 12 small windows around the dial, with the current month in red. The gearing knows which months have 30 days and which have 31, so the only manual correction is once a year, at the start of March.

What is the Sky-Dweller Ring Command bezel?

Ring Command links the fluted bezel to the crown and movement. Turning the bezel to a click position chooses what the crown adjusts: the date and month, the local hour, or the reference time on the 24-hour disc. With no pushers or correctors in the case, the watch keeps a 100-metre water rating.

What is the difference between the Sky-Dweller 326934 and 336934?

Both are 42mm Oystersteel watches with an 18k white gold bezel. The 326934 came out in 2017 with calibre 9001. The 336934 replaced it in 2023 with calibre 9002, which adds the Chronergy escapement and better resistance to magnetism. Power reserve stays at about 72 hours. The 336934 has two small coronets at 6 o'clock.

Is the Rolex Sky-Dweller too big at 42mm?

It wears larger than 42mm suggests, because the case is about 13.8mm thick and the bracelet is broad. Reviewers found it comfortable on wrists above roughly 17cm. On slimmer wrists it can feel top-heavy, so try one first.

How much is a Rolex Sky-Dweller?

On October 26, 2026, Rolex's US site listed the 336934 at $17,750 on the Oyster bracelet and $17,950 on the Jubilee. Gold models on Oysterflex were listed at $51,400 and $53,450. At the March 2023 launch the 336934 was $15,650. List prices change, so check Rolex's US site before you buy. Pre-owned prices depend on reference, metal, condition and papers, so live Dialist listings show what watches are asking now.

How often does a Sky-Dweller need servicing?

Since 2015, Rolex's recommended service interval has been about 10 years under normal wear. The calendar, 24-hour disc and Ring Command bezel add parts, so have every function tested after a service. A rate well outside spec, a short power reserve or a gritty bezel can mean it is due sooner.
