The Milgauss is the antimagnetic Rolex, built in 1956 for the scientists at CERN to withstand a thousand gauss, which is where the name comes from. The modern watch has an orange lightning-bolt seconds hand and, on the GV references, a green-tinted sapphire crystal that no other Rolex has used. Rolex discontinued it in March 2023 without a successor.
Every Milgauss on Dialist is listed by a verified dealer and covered by buyer protection. The Z-Blue and black green-crystal watches are reachable from the directory below; for the same case in current production, compare the Air-King, or the Explorer for a plainer steel Rolex.
The 6543 of 1954 was the prototype and the 6541 of 1956 the first real Milgauss: a 38 mm case with a soft-iron inner shield, a honeycomb dial, a rotating bezel and the lightning-bolt seconds hand. The 1019 of 1960 to 1988 dropped the bezel and the bolt for a plainer look and a straight red-tipped seconds hand; CERN-issued examples without luminous material are the rarest. Then the Milgauss left the catalogue for nineteen years.
Rolex brought it back in 2007 as the 116400 in a 40 mm case on the calibre 3131, in black or white with a clear crystal, and as the 116400GV, glace verte, with a green sapphire and black dial for the fiftieth anniversary. The Z-Blue of 2014 paired the green crystal with an electric blue dial coated with zirconium, and it became the Milgauss most people picture.
The clear-crystal watches were phased out by 2016 and the two GV dials carried on until Watches and Wonders 2023, when Rolex retired the model. The 116900 Air-King of 2016 to 2022 used the same case and movement, so the Milgauss lives on in a sense.
Dials and crystals
Z-Blue with the green crystal is the collector favourite; black with the green crystal is the anniversary watch; black or white with a clear crystal are the 2007 to 2016 references. All four share the 116400 number, so the suffix GV and the photographs matter.

Movement
Calibre 3131, a 3130 with a Parachrom hairspring and the soft-iron shield that gives the watch its 1,000 gauss rating. About 48 hours of reserve, chronometer certified, no date because a date window would breach the shield.
Size
40 mm and about 13 mm thick for every modern reference, with polished centre links and the Easylink clasp. Vintage 6541 and 1019 are 38 mm.
Vintage
The 1019 is the accessible vintage Milgauss and comes in black or silver; the 6541 is a six-figure collector's watch. Check the shield, the dial and the seconds hand are original, as parts have been swapped for decades.
Milgauss or Air-King
The 116900 Air-King of 2016 to 2022 shares the Milgauss's 40 mm case and calibre 3131. If you want the antimagnetic Rolex at a lower price, the Air-King is the way; if you want the green crystal and the bolt, there is only the Milgauss.
