The Sea-Dweller is the Submariner built for saturation diving: a thicker case, a helium escape valve at nine o'clock and a depth rating of 1,220 metres, four times the Submariner's. It was developed with the French diving company COMEX and has been in the catalogue since 1967. The current watch is 43 mm, with the red Sea-Dweller line on the dial that collectors waited forty years to see again.
Every Sea-Dweller on Dialist is listed by a verified dealer and covered by buyer protection. Start with the Sea-Dweller 43, or with the James Cameron if you want the 44 mm Deepsea.
Divers living in pressurised habitats breathe helium, and helium that seeps into a watch during a dive can pop the crystal off during decompression. Rolex's answer in 1967 was a one-way valve on the case side, and the 1665 that carried it was rated to 610 metres. Its early dials carry two red lines of text, the Double Red, and the later all-white print is the Great White. Both are acrylic-crystal watches with no Cyclops.
The 16660 of 1978, the Triple Six, brought a sapphire crystal, a unidirectional bezel and a 1,220 metre rating. The 16600 ran from 1989 to 2008 and is the longest-lived modern Sea-Dweller. Rolex then dropped the 40 mm watch for the Deepsea, brought it back briefly as the 116600 of 2014 to 2017 with a ceramic bezel, and replaced that with the 43 mm 126600 at the fiftieth anniversary in 2017, the first Sea-Dweller with a Cyclops lens and the calibre 3235.
The 126603 of 2019 is the first Sea-Dweller in steel and yellow gold. The 44 mm Deepsea, rated to 3,900 metres, grew out of this collection in 2008 and has been a collection of its own since 2024; the Deepsea references our catalogue still files under Sea-Dweller are reachable from the tiles above.

The Sea-Dweller is 43 mm to the Submariner's 41, about 15 mm thick, rated to 1,220 metres against 300, and has the helium valve. It costs more and wears noticeably bigger; the Submariner is the everyday watch, the Sea-Dweller the statement.
Sizes
40 mm from 1967 to 2017 (1665, 16660, 16600, 116600), 43 mm since 2017 (126600, 126603), 44 mm for the Deepsea. The 40 mm 16600 is the way to get a Sea-Dweller that wears like a Submariner.
Materials
Steel for fifty years; the 126603 of 2019 added steel and yellow gold with a gold bezel and centre links. The Deepsea is steel, with a yellow-gold 136668LB since 2024.
Movements
The 1665 runs the calibre 1570 or 1575, the 16660 the 3035, the 16600 and 116600 the 3135 with 48 hours of reserve, and the 126600 and 126603 the 3235 with 70 hours and the Chronergy escapement.
Helium valve and bezel
Every Sea-Dweller has the valve; it does nothing on the surface and is not a weak point. Bezels are aluminium up to the 16600 and ceramic from the 116600. Check the valve and the crown for correct sealing on any vintage piece before it goes near water.
