The Daytona is the Rolex chronograph: a 40 mm Oyster case, three counters, and a tachymeter scale on the bezel for reading average speed over a measured distance. Rolex built it for racing drivers in 1963 and named it after the Florida speedway. For twenty years it sold slowly; today it is the hardest Rolex to buy at retail and the most traded on the secondary market.
Every Daytona on Dialist is listed by a verified dealer and covered by buyer protection. Browse by metal or edition above, or start with the steel Daytona, the reference most people are looking for.
The first Daytonas were hand-wound, built on the Valjoux 72, and sat unsold in dealer windows. The exotic-dial versions of the 1960s and 1970s, later nicknamed the Paul Newman after the actor who wore one, are now the most valuable Rolex watches of all; his own example sold at auction in 2017 for 17.75 million dollars.
In 1988 Rolex moved to an automatic movement based on the Zenith El Primero, and the Daytona became a waiting-list watch almost overnight. The first in-house chronograph calibre arrived in 2000 with the six-digit references, and the ceramic Cerachrom bezel followed on the steel model in 2016.
The current generation launched in 2023 for the model's sixtieth anniversary: a new calibre with a Chronergy escapement, a slimmer case, and on the metal models a thin ring of case metal framing the ceramic bezel.
Materials
Steel is the hardest to find and trades well above its list price. Yellow, white and Everose gold, two-tone Rolesor and platinum are all current; gold on an Oysterflex bracelet is usually the least expensive precious-metal route in.

Dials
Black and white are the core pair; the white dial with black counters is the Panda. Gold and platinum references add green, blue, ice blue, chocolate, meteorite and gem-set dials, each of which changes the price considerably.
Movements
Vintage four-digit references are hand-wound; five-digit references from 1988 use the Zenith-based calibre 4030; six-digit references from 2000 carry the in-house 4130; the 2023 generation carries the 4131 with a 72-hour reserve.
Sizes and bezels
Modern Daytonas are 40 mm; vintage pieces run around 37 mm. The bezel is a tachymeter in either case metal or black ceramic, and the current metal models frame the ceramic insert in a thin ring of gold or platinum.
Box and papers
Scarcity makes provenance matter more here than on most Rolex models. A full set with warranty card adds a clear premium, and an unpolished case is worth asking a dealer about on any reference older than ten years.
