The Day-Date is the Rolex that spells out the day: the first wristwatch to show the day of the week in full alongside the date, introduced in 1956 and made only in gold or platinum ever since. The President bracelet was created for it, and the watch is known by that name as often as by its own.
Every Day-Date on Dialist is listed by a verified dealer and covered by buyer protection. Start with the Day-Date 40, the current reference in yellow gold, or the Day-Date 36, the original size.
Lyndon Johnson wore a yellow-gold Day-Date in office, the first Rolex on a sitting American president, and the semi-circular three-link bracelet Rolex had designed for the watch became the President. The 36 mm case was the only size for almost fifty years; the quickset date arrived in 1977 with the 18038 and the double quickset for day and date in 1988 with the 18238.
The 41 mm Day-Date II ran from 2008 to 2015 and was replaced by the Day-Date 40, references 228238 and its siblings, with the calibre 3255 and a 70-hour reserve. The Day-Date 36 took the same movement in 2019. The day disc is available in 26 languages, which is a detail the pre-owned market cares about: an English disc is the easiest to resell.
Platinum Day-Dates carry the ice-blue dial Rolex uses on no other metal; the gold models carry champagne, black, green and the newer stone and ombré dials.
Sizes
36 mm is the original and fits under a cuff; 40 mm is the current proportion with a flatter dial and more presence. The 41 mm Day-Date II of 2008 to 2015 is a third option with a broader bezel and a loyal following.

Metals
Yellow gold is the classic President and the largest part of the market; rose gold is warmer and newer; white gold reads as steel from a distance at a gold price; platinum is the top of the range and the heaviest, usually with the ice-blue dial.
Bezels and dials
Fluted is the signature bezel; smooth and diamond-set exist on selected references. Dials run from champagne and black to stone, wood and gem-set, and the dial is often most of the price difference between two references in the same metal.
Bracelets
The President bracelet with its hidden Crownclasp is standard; some platinum references come on an Oyster, and vintage pieces can turn up on leather. A worn, stretched President bracelet is the main thing to check on a vintage gold watch.
Movements
Vintage 18038 and 18238 references run the calibre 3055 and 3155; the 118238 generation from 2000 keeps the 3155; the Day-Date 40 and the current 36 run the 3255 with 70 hours of reserve and the Chronergy escapement.
